Day 14 continues with a visit to a farmhouse

Along the way, we stopped at a traditional home. The children are all grown and moved into town, but the wife and grandmother prefer to stay in their family home. At the front door is the grandmother, a delight old lady who only had a few stubby teeth and was very welcoming. She is carrying a charcoal burner to help keep her hands warm. In the living room, she invited me to sit down, and she showed me how to peel and eat a pomello. I was leery of eating from her hand, but decided to do it anyway. The pomello was quite good--much like a grapefruit, and I didn't get sick.

The third picture is a peek into the bedroom, and the last one is of the family casket. Because they are so costly, families buy them when they are able, and keep them on hand until needed. Apparently, an American tourist left his mark in the dust.

There were red tags on many things throughout the house because this was the day of the dead. This is the day to honor ancestors by going to the graves and cleaning them up. They also burn fake money so the ancestors will have enough in the afterlife, and make LOTS of noise to scare away the evil spirits. I'm not sure how the red tags fit in, but they seem to be part of the ceremony.
