Day 3 Beijing continued

We learned a lot about the "Dragon Lady" Empress and the things she did to promote herself. For example, she was actually a concubine, but when the Emperor died, she worked it out for her son (3-4 years old) to become Emperor. As his mother, she became Empress and very powerful. She used the Navy budget to build a beautiful island pavilion and bridge. The flowers were just getting ready to bloom and the weather for the day was perfect -- about 65 and sunny. The local guide, Allen, said he rarely saw the mountains beyond the palace, but we could see them today.
