Day 3 More about the Summer Palace

Her son built this magnificent summer home for her as a birthday gift, and he also built the longest covered walkway in the world for her when she was old. She use to travel with him, and when she was too old to go with him, he took artists, who painted pictures of where he had been. These pictures were then painted on the ceiling of the walkway.

The reason the mountains are rarely seen was because of the smog. All of China seems to have a serious air quality problem, because of the rapid growth in industry. The largest cities seem to be the worst, but even most of the rural areas are hazy. The entire country is gearing up for the 2008 Olympics, with construction everywhere and smog is one issue they are trying to deal with. They even are working on the street signs and directions to correct the English before the visitors arrive. They are planting a huge number of trees to help clean up the air, but it will require a lot more than that to control the smog. My guess is that they will shut down all the factories for a month or so before the games!
