Day 15 Next stop -- Hangzhou

This is a only full travel day we have had on the trip.

Before we could go to Hangzhou, we had to take the bus back to Guilin and fly to Shanghai. It was a two hour bus ride, and then a two hour flight. After that, it was another three hour bus ride before we arrived at our hotel.

Along the road to Hangzhou, we saw much nicer houses than we have seen before. Our new local guide, Philip, explained that these homes belonged to the farmers in the area. Since this part of China was one of the first areas to be developed when the country was opened to the West, they were able to get their produce and crops to a ready market. They then invested their profits in various commercial ventures, especially in Shanghai, and became very wealthy.

We were told that each of these houses is for only one family--they aren't apartment buildings.
