Day Two - More about China

This is the view from our 11th floor hotel room at night.

The thing I noticed at first about the Chinese people working in the service industry -- stewardesses, bell hops, hotel workers, etc. -- were all somber. They were doing their jobs but didn't seem happy or friendly. My memory from our 1983 visit was very different. Everyone was excited to see us and did everything they could to make us happy. We wondered if part of the difference was the little boys we had with us that visit. Another possibility is that American visitors were new to them and they were excited about seeing people from the West. After being in China a little longer, we realized that our initial observation wasn't completely true, and probably the main issue was lack of language ability.
